Yucaipa, in alliance with the Newspaper Guild, submitted a tentative bid for the Knight Ridder newspapers put up for sale by McClatchy that included a range of possible prices.
Joseph Menn hears the upper end of the bid was "in the neighborhood" of $2.2 billion -- a price that could make him a serious contender in the bidding.
