Foley spawns media frenzy
By Jennifer Mooney Piedra
The Miami Herald
Published: 10/23/2006

Excerpt:

It has all the elements of a good story: sex, scandal and suspense. And a disgraced high-ranking politician.

Journalists from near and far are hooked on the race to fill the congressional seat of Mark Foley, the Palm Beach County Republican who resigned a few weeks ago amid revelations that he exchanged sexually explicit Internet messages with teenage boys.

Palm Beach County is once again the center of the political universe as reporters from CNN, Japanese television networks, BBC, National Public Radio, The Economist and other news outlets are on the front line trailing the two candidates.

Had the electronic messages not come to light, Foley would still be running for reelection, and local media wouldn't have so much company covering the race. ...

... ''It's lurid. It's highly politicized. And there happens to be a lot at stake,'' said Roy Peter Clark, senior scholar at the Poynter Institute, a school for journalists in St. Petersburg. "It does not get better -- or worse -- than that."
