Sniper footage fuels debate on media ethics

Excerpt:

Just days after a 2005 Citadel graduate was killed by a sniper's bullet in Iraq, CNN is fending off criticism for its decision to air video footage showing similar alleged sniper attacks on U.S. forces.

Marine 2nd Lt. Joshua Booth was killed Oct. 17 while leading his platoon on foot patrol in Haditha. Booth was well known and respected by cadets and faculty alike on the campus of the Charleston military college. His funeral is scheduled for Thursday in Virginia.

CNN's decision to broadcast parts of an insurgent video that shows 10 sniper attacks on U.S. soldiers renewed a national debate over media ethics in a time of war. The identity of the victims in the sniper footage is unknown. ...

... Al Tompkins of the Poynter Institute teaches journalism ethics to media professionals. He said the CNN footage is newsworthy because of the recent uptick in violence in Iraq, which in part has been fueled by sniper attacks. He applauded the network's efforts to minimize gratuitous scenes while still educating the public about the defining conflict of our time.
