Knight Ridder has worried about a takeover scenario for years, James Naughton, a former executive editor of The Philadelphia Inquirer and retired president of the Poynter Institute, a journalism think tank, told the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
"Any time journalists would protest that they were doing bad things to
journalism in the interest of business, (management) would say they
need to do it in order to fend off a takeover," Naughton said.
"There's always been a tension between journalism and business, but in
the last decade, business has been very much predominant. The mystery
to me is why communities don't rise up in anger at what's being done to
their media in the name of profit."
