into tourism dollars, further denting a city already struggling with
its image, local and national marketing experts say...
Karen Brown Dunlap, president of the Poynter Institute, a journalism
research and education center in St. Petersburg, Fla., said the story
demonstrates the downside of intense competition from 24-hour news
coverage and the on-going challenge reporters face in getting accurate
information from officials.
"Journalists constantly face the hurdles of accuracy from the
officials," she said. "Journalists are always on deadline now because
of 24 news and online coverage. Stories get ahead of them. They need to
keep checking and pull back. . . . Ultimately the journalist has to get
it correct, not the official."
