Gambling ring could taint hockey

Two questions remain after New Jersey police released the details of "Operation Slapshot," an ongoing investigation into a multimillion-dollar gambling ring allegedly run by Phoenix Coyotes assistant coach Rick Tocchet and a New Jersey state trooper.

First, who's next?...The second question is, who cares?

"I think it's more complicated than simple hypocrisy on the part of newspapers," said Kelly McBride, ethics group leader for the Poynter Institute, a school for career journalists in St. Petersburg, Fla. "As a society, we send mixed messages about gambling.

"Why are we so offended when a professional athlete bets on sports? Part of it is because of the potential to taint the game, a la Pete Rose. I don't know if we've done a very good job in the newspaper world of examining that ambiguity around gambling."
