Media must print DUIs, expert says
By Kris Wernosky
Times Leader
Published: 4/7/06

Excerpt:

The drunken driving arrest of Hazleton Standard-Speaker publisher and executive Vice President Paul N. Walser Jr. did not appear in Thursday’s edition of the Hazleton paper or its media partners, despite what one journalism ethics expert called a responsibility of the media to do so.

"I think you have an obligation to apply the same standards to yourself that you apply to others," said Kelly McBride, ethics group leader and columnist for the Poynter Institute for journalists in St. Petersburg, Fla. "If the CEO of a major corporation in town is arrested for DUI, you would report on it. If the president of a local university got arrested for DUI, you report it."

The Walser family name has been associated with executive positions at the Standard-Speaker in some form since 1912, according to the masthead on the paper’s editorial page. Walser, his brother Stephen H. Walser and their father Paul N. Walser hold executive jobs there.
