Facing Discrimination on the Job: How to Deal?
By: Mallary Jean Tenore

Relatives of a man who was arrested with charges of murder attacked and yelled racial slurs at a WSPA-TV reporter and cameraman Tuesday afternoon. The relatives were reportedly upset with journalists for reporting on the arrest. WYFF-TV reports:

WSPA news director Alex Bongiorno says the family members, all white, began yelling and charged at black reporter Charmayne Brown while she was standing near the family's home in Union. Brown was reporting on the death of 73-year-old Tommy Howell, who was killed by a blow to the head after an argument. Howell's grandson is charged in the incident.

Cameraman Ti Barnes, who is black, was also struck while trying to pull the group away from Brown, according to WYFF. A white crew from another television station filmed the incident and was not attacked. Brown said she believes the attacks were racially motivated.

If you've encountered discrimination while in the field reporting, how did you handle it?
