Too early to apply for jobs?

Q: I've used your collection of job sites extensively, and just wanted to let you know that for young journalists, I think they are one of the best tools available on the net.

Courant I have a question for you that is twofold, really. I'm a senior at Temple University in Philadelphia, and have two internships under my belt, a paid one last summer at the Hartford Courant, and one at the Philadelphia Metro, a free daily here with a circ. of about 170,000. I've also done extensive work at my college newspaper, including sports, news, and feature writing.

I'm graduating in May, and was wondering a few things about the job application process, which I've already begun. In my cover letter, I clearly indicate that I'm in school until May, but make sure to point out my experience. Is this a good idea?

Second, what are my chances of getting a job if I apply in December/January? I've already sent out several (about 30) and will, of course, keep applying as graduation draws closer.

Ross in Philadelphia

A: You sound well organized and prepared. You might also be a little early.

In December, newspapers are looking for summer interns. The positions are budgeted; they know the openings will occur.

Newspapers do not, however, have a very good idea of what permanent openings they'll be filling in May. Those hires are typically generated by departures. So, the job you hope to land in May is right now being filled by someone who may be resigning in March or April. There is a good chance not even those people know they will be leaving.

So, December queries about May openings might not get much reaction.

It would be OK to take a few months off from your job search, or to turn those application letters into heads-up letters that just try to get you on the radar screen.

Whatever you do, revisit in March or April the papers you've already written to. Do not take a lack of interest now as a sign that they won't be interested when you graduate. They just don't know yet.

Give Me a Sign

As we travel our career paths, wondering where to go next, we get signs. They can be in places ordinary or unexpected. They can come from above or from the road commission. We use those signs in Ask the Recruiter.

If you see a sign that speaks to you about your career, e-mail a photo of it to joe.grimm@gmail.com. Who knows? The sign you see may serve another.
