No good deed goes unpunished ...
... as my old boss, Bob McGruder used to say.

Occasionally, I try to give candidates advice that I hope will help them achieve their goals. I always do so with a little trepidation, as it can tick off the candidate and waste my time.

I advised one older student who was making a transition into writing to get some experience in it at the campus paper. She flamed me, telling me why she did not need to work with a bunch of 22-year-olds, misspelling my name throughout the e-mail.

But, then, there was the e-mail I got this past week from someone who seemed grateful for a hard and honest critique of her photo portfolio. I'll keep helping her. You can keep the first one.
