How Much Are Reporter Salaries?
Q. I have a question perhaps others would find helpful regarding compensation.

interviews coming up. The bad news is that I feel like I'm picking numbers out of thin air when asked my wage requirements.

My particular case is that I have 10 years of experience, went to a top j-school, but for family reasons (i.e., location, location, location) have taken a series of low-paying jobs at smaller papers.

So I think I'm worth x, but I've been earning less-than-x for a long time. Do you know of any publicly available wage surveys that could provide an objective starting point for salary negotiations?

Confused on Compensation

A. This is a major unknown when we try to negotiate pay. We just don't have a very good idea of what we are worth or how much employers are willing to pay. Employers have several contexts to consider.

They can ask what the applicant already earns, they know the topography of their newsroom payrolls and they can subscribe to services that pool and share salary data.

One of the best place to try is salary.com. The site provides estimates, based on job title and location, of what others make.

Also check the salary information posted by the Newspaper Guild-CWA.


Coming Monday: In her excitement about getting a job offer, she forgot to calculate the amount of money she would need in this market and is just getting by. She wonders if it is too soon to ask for a raise.
