This question came up in a panel organized by Bill Connolly at the American Copy Editors Society conference in Minneapolis.Q. What do you do if you go for a job interview and the person interviewing you is younger than you are?
Candidate with ExperienceA. Discriminating on the basis of age is wrong whether you are looking for a job or trying to get one.
The older I get, the more younger people I work for. That's natural and not a problem, provided they are good. Most are. That's how they got their jobs.
We like to be judged on the basis of our merits -- not when we were born -- and that's how to think about these situations.
The fact of the matter is, we
need more young heads at the helms of our media companies because we need fresh ideas. We need to not just have them working in the newsroom, but in positions where they can try out their ideas and help us innovate.
If I were to interview at a newsroom where all the managers were older than I am, I would be very afraid.
Susan's observations are somehow exactly right and exactly wrong. Absolutely....
