The Onion

I think America is ready...

I've just had a quick look around the Onion site and, while I think they're treading a very fine line, I think on the whole they do a fine job with such a difficult subject. It's the media's job not just to report but also to dissect events and help the public make sense of things and I think the kind of satire the Onion uses, while sometimes missing the mark, is by it's very nature always going to be offensive to certain people. And in this instance I don't think they are using satire in a wholly irreverent way.

I write political humor & struggle with that issue

I've been struggling with that very issue because I write a daily Presidential parody, Dubya's Dayly Diary. At least, I wrote it until Sept. 11th, when I put it on hiatus. I now face the issue of whether or when to resume it.

I've been getting mixed messages from fans of the column. Most tell me I was right to put it on hiatus, but that I should resume it ASAP because it's the job of political humorists to point out our government's foibles, even at a time like this. A handful of friends caution me to wait a very long time, worrying that I will be viewed as unpatriotic if I resume it while we're at "war." And a few readers have told me that I've already let them down by failing to be a satirical watchdog during a time when civil liberties are especially endangered. Others have cautioned me that when I return I shouldn't be too "nice."

I'd love some feedback on this. I do worry that the terrorist attacks have turned political humor into an endangered species. (The Onion's articles have done a bit to assuage those fears.) But, for instance, watching the late night talk show hosts quite visibly struggle to entertain us, act patriotic, behave sensitively, and not lose any ad dollars has been very disturbing.

On a lighter note, I wrote a satirical piece about the late night talk show hosts (and poltiical humorists in general) and the challenges they face:

President Always a Worthy Target

Yes, America is ready to laugh. And, let's face it, our President is the biggest and best target we've had since Dan Quayle.

The piece "U.S. Vows To Defeat Whoever It Is We're At War With" is so on target that, had no one told you it was a humor piece, you would have believed our president had actually said it. The beauty of having such an idiot in office is that, like Quayle, you almost don't have to work at it: just quote him and you've got the laugh.

I think it is important that we do keep quoting him and illuminating the quality of person who was appointed to our highest office. It is vital to the national security that we know exactly what we're dealing with and, most importantly, what he is doing and saying at all times.

By all means, continue to write these pieces. Restoring America's sense of humor will also restore our vitality and critical faculties, two things that have largely been put on hold in and by the media.

Onion did it well

I was really grateful The Onion came back, and I thought, for the most part, they handled everything very well. The God and American Flag cake stories caught me by surprise and made me weep -- I can't even imagine having to try to be funny in the wake of Sept. 11. I don't think there was anything in bad taste, and to be honest, I needed to laugh.

Yeah, I'm ready to laugh

I thought the Onion satire was funny, particularly the "Hijackers Surprised to Find Selves in Hell" piece. I'm ready to resume various forms of escapism, including watching the "Enterprise" premiere. Don't be surprised if this show does better than it deserves to - people are looking both for escape and for a Prime Directive, a sense of something Right.

This is going to sound bad, but

The Onion's issue was actually the first thing to bring the attack home for me. I live on the other side of the country and I've never been anywhere near New York, and although I know people who were involved, it really did seem unreal. The Onion sort of changed that. The article about the cake really blindsided me. It was the first tears I've shed about this thing. I don't know if that makes me a bad person, but it's true.
