You Get What You Pay For

Another Benefit

Another benefit of paid email accounts is that it will increase the legitimacy of online communications (e.g. paid email addresses will be tied to: real accounts, real postal addresses, real people, etc. - properly protected by the email providers, of course). The eliminaton of free accounts should also help decrease the amount of spam currently sent via bogus accounts (e.g. adfaslkdfhksdafh@yahoo.com).

Here's a recent example of this trend: I recently signed up for a free account with ESPN.com but my Hotmail address was not accepted (instead I had to use my email address from my DSL provider). I assume that ESPN's rational is to foster more responsible message boards. (I agree with this). Although, I hope that someday soon Hotmail will be able to communicate to the external world that my account IS a paid account.
