Small newspapers are local-focused

Newspapers must wonder what will happen to them if their readership turns away from print and elects to read online versions of the papers instead. When you don't know who your readership is, how do you know what news your audience is going to want to read, and how do you sell to advertisers based on readership demographics?
Being on the web also makes little guys compete with the big guys. I suppose it's not hard to imagine going from reading my local news as a paper, to reading it online and as long as I'm on line, well, why read my local paper any more? I could as well read the Washington Post or the New York Times.
Perhaps small newspapers have the same concerns as most local-focused businesses do when it comes down to the question of what the web will do to assist in their businesses' development. A lot of creative thinking is going to take place before good solutions that translate to increased revenue and trade are discovered for small businesses of any type that depend on and service a geographically small area.
