Should We Give Up on Advertising?

You say "promising" new forms of online advertising; I say "frightening." Isn't it bad enough that we already have to suffer ads so desperate to attract attention that they virtually overtake the Web page you're trying to view, bombarding you with video, audio, animation, whatever they can? From banner ads to pop-ups to "surround sessions" -- this is progress? This is supposed to persuade Web users to look more favorably upon advertisers? Do people actually believe that increased irritation is an effective sales tool?
