A few years ago, the McGwire/Sosa home-run race generated excitement about baseball in the general public -- even among non-fans of baseball. People were genuinely interested when networks cut in to show McGwire's record-setting homer. This time, I think people are still interested in Bond's pursuit of a new record, but the event will happen as a dull thud if the accompanying cut-ins and hype can't accompany the actual event. Major League Baseball is squandering a publicity opportunity that many other sports would love to have.
