ContentBiz was mentioned in one of the other E-Media Tidbits entries. It's at http://www.contentbiz.com/.
It offers valuable case studies of strategies used by various publishers (web sites, e-newsletters, etc.)
to develop and market paid content. Keep in mind that the case studies usually focus on sources with
specialized content, but there's no reason why general news sites can't profit from developing certain
niche features and services that are "premium" offerings.

thanks for the mention. that's precisely what i am trying to do with this site--get the business and technology parts together, categorize them, and hopefully we will be able to discern some trends. cross-learning from these efforts is what i am hoping. as much as i wish i could do a how-to, i am not qualified enough for it. i am not sure very many people are, since the business models are evolving. i would suggest try to look for examples in as many other disciplines possible… see how libraries have done similar efforts…and they have done it successfully. see how P&G does sampling of consumer goods and then try to convert them to buyers. research on pricing curves, dynamic pricing, loyalty programs etc...that's at least what i am hoping to pollinate into the site...let's see how it goes.

The reportage on these sites is invaluable.

However, some STRATEGIC sites would be helpful to. Example: HOW does a content publisher introduce paid access to users that (previously) had been getting a free ride?
