Many of YIL's writers and editors had work-from-home arrangements of varying flexibility. Jeanne's point here is... obscure.

Too much overhead

Many companies should consider shutting down their offices and letting employees work from home. I used to telecommute. I worked very hard, and I never took a paper clip or a cup of coffee from the company. The company didn't have to pay for my office, furniture, electricity, plumbing, etc. It paid for my calls, and not much else. And I gladly took a lower salary than average because I enjoyed working at home.

The technology is there; why don't more companies use it? Because they want big, fancy offices to show off. It's all about glamor and status, not profits.

Root causes?

I confess I know nothing about magazine feasibility. However, I'm puzzled as to how it's
possible to fail to sell enough advertising to support a publication that has 1.1 million circulation,
undoubtedly many of them upscale consumers. Is that really the result of the dot-com
bubble bursting or is it the result of poor performance by the folks running the magazine?
Anyone have any observations?
