Count me as one of the visitors who doesn't put down accurate information - it's not that I'm afraid that the site will knowingly abuse it - but that it might get into the wrong hands. You can have my zip code, but my date or year of birth - no.

I would, however, accurately select a radio button that gave a range of ages (a 5 or 10 year range, perhaps). Wouldn't that serve most purposes?

Would it occur to a journalism professor to explain to his young charges that the reason sites are asking for registration data is to create enough revenue that we might someday be able to afford to hire a few of his students?

Has anyone studied how accurate this information is believed to be? What percentage of visitors put down
bogus information to get in because they're in a hurry and are suspicious of abuse? And how does it
impact the number of page views from external links and search engines?
