Community Websites to go black

I may be the only one who heard this idea "somewhere in a newscast", but here it is anyway.

On September 10 - 12, community websites (as opposed to ecommerce and busines sites) will be going "black" (offline) in honor of the victims of 9-11.

According to the snippet I heard on the radio newcast while shopping (so I have no idea of the station), this idea started in New York City and will hopefully be a national action.

In my case, I manage a neighborhood website (www.BarkingDogs.org) in Dallas - our site was the run that Belo went after for deep linking, which is how I ended up on this forum

My site will have the photo of the three firemen raising the US flag on the rubble - all my directories on the server will be renamed with an "x" as the first letter so nothing will be available to the public (ie through search engines).

I can only guess that the idea is for people to remember things on a national level of honor and thought about what happened. The local stuff - the little things - can wait a few days while we honor those who died.

I sincerely hope that someone else knows about this story and puts up a reply. I would hate to think that I have been hearing "voices" while shopping in the supermarket.
