IHT.com's design doesn't work for everyone. My university-issue Netscape 4.61 browser sticks to single-column format, though the alternative IE5.5 does the job.

The horizontal layout of the IHT site takes me back to 1975 and a "copy editing and makeup class" at MIami University (the one in Ohio). Laying out horizontally--the way the eyes read from right to left--made sense then, and it makes even more sense now. Maybe more sites will start using this kind of layout. I'm hooked....

IHT.com was designed by John Weir, a California based designer. check out his site http://www.smokinggun.com/ for some more tools for web design. his browser tools are also great.
and the new IHT site is almost two years old, so the design's way ahead of current news sites...
