It occurs to me that with paid-only content, more and more people will be getting their news from just one source, instead of the myraid sources the Internet is so handy at providing. Bad news for users.

I hope this does not sound simplistic, but I think that what you propose as a solution may not kill weblogs, but definitely will cripple them. Even using Time policy, which lets you read two past weeks for free, any reference to older articles will result in broken links. The publisher of a daily newspaper may be tempted to consider even shorter allowances. Not a very pleasant thought if a weblog's archive is to become a valuable resource someday.
