Annoying

It is *extremely* annoying to be hit on for cash instead of being linked to an article. So much so that I would cancel my subscription to any weblog that persists in linking to fee-based content (esp. from a pub out of which I may read one article a year).

Many or most of those monthly health club memberships are paid by credit card auto-renewal.
Each credit card bill reminds members that they're paying for the service so they resolve to use it more often. The same will hold for online subscribers. Rich, Don't be such a worrywart.

Don't like auto-renewal

"I have repeatedly heard it suggested that publishers should try to sign up users for credit card payments and auto-renewals. "

I am increasingly distrustful of organizations that have auto-renewal because I have found several occasions where it has been very difficult to cancel. This has cost me money and so now I wont subscribe where this is a requirement without first checking how easy it is to close it. I then close the renewal immediately after sign up.

The reason companies use this approach is that they hope / know that inertia and forgetfulness will keep some people signed up even when they no longer really use the service. To me this is dishonest, and any company insisting on auto-renewal automatically becomes suspect.
