Clearly, many people are retreating from media today and remembering in their own way. But another explanation probably can be found in Carla Passino's item, two below Steve's:

"Whether meditative or sanguine, traditional media coverage of the first anniversary of September 11 suffers from a degree of sameness. From the Washington Post to the New York Times, from The Times (Britain) to La Repubblica (Italy), newspapers (and their online editions) carry similar stories and similar pictures."

Out here in Reno, Nevada, students in my online reporting class voted to NOT cover any Sept. 11 events happening on our campus today. Yesterday, students in my media ethics class did not want to watch any footage of the specials that have been airing on TV . When I played the first 20 minutes of the CNN special "America Remembers" one student left the room sobbing before it ended, and the rest were visibly shaken. They did not want to talk afterwards. Only two had watched any of the coverage so far; no one planned to watch any today, except when forced to by assignments.
