Modest 9/11 Web Traffic Gains

Big traffic gains for weblogs

Steve reports modest traffic gains for media sites and wonders whether users have had enough of September 11 coverage.

I think that - up to a point - this is true. The thirst for news which the event triggered has partly given way to escapism in online as well as other media.

But...I also think traditional media outlets have lost eyeballs to weblogs, which report significant traffic gains.

Instapundit (http://www.instapundit.com), for example, registered 100,000 page views, which equates to a 143% increase over its average number of page views per day, while my own Sentinel (http://www.carlapassino.com/sentinel/index.html), which has a broader international focus and can hardly be qualified as a warblog, totalled a massive 1250% increase.

Perhaps this will spark a rethink of how we cover big news on the web?
