What's important right now?

Normally I'd say I like to concept of mean&lean, but

The new home page doesn't not help readers finding out what's important right now. This could be done by making some headline more prominent and selecting some stories for the front page.

The new home page doesn't incourage user-input as much as the old page. Why - well - because the examples from other users have been removed from the front page. And isen't content provided by users the core of this site?

Both the old and new pages do need some pictures. Theme Parks are all about sights, sounds, smelling the popcorn - and of course physical motion. All the sences. Text doesn't do the job alone.

What's Big? What's New?

Clean and clear, yes. When I know where I'm going, it'll work well.
But one of our "things" for a news site is an ability to show readers: "Here's our big story" and "Here's our newest story" - things I don't see that design doing very well.
Jon (who works at http:/www.theindependent.com - not that it's perfect)
