Don't write if you don't want to, fools.

Suite101.com's decision to terminate payment for their writers came as no surprise, the honorarium they were receiving for the amount of work they put in was laughable anyway. The appalling attitude in Mr. Bradshaw's announcement to his staff, however, was more than a surprise.

He claims that if his passion were playing golf he would likely have to pay fees at a golf course. As though a writer's passion for writing should be enough and we should be grateful that he provides the service of allowing us to give him our work?

This attitude is just another stumbling block that writers everywhere have been dealing with for a very long time. It's unfortunate (and rare, thank goodness) that it comes from someone in a professional position to change the prevailing attitudes.

Perhaps a more responsible attitude for Mr. Bradshaw would be to view circumstances with a more professional mindset. If his hobby were playing golf he would certainly pay fees to enjoy it. If it were his passion, his career, he would own the course and collect the fees. If not he would, at the very least, compete for the large purses won by those who do it well.
