Slate Magazine Adds Top Technology Writer Adam Penenberg

Slate Magazine, the award-winning news and entertainment website, welcomes Adam Penenberg, one of the best-known technology writers in the world. A former Senior Editor at Forbes and reporter for Forbes.com, Penenberg garnered national attention in 1998 for unmasking serial fabricator Stephen Glass of The New Republic. Penenberg's story was a watershed for online investigative journalism and is portrayed in a major motion picture entitled "Shattered Glass."

Penenberg’s December 1999 cover story for Forbes, "The End of Privacy," was read into the Congressional Record during hearings on privacy. His research has often led him into the world of hackers: Penenberg published the first interview with then-jailed hacker/martyr/celebrity Kevin Mitnick for Forbes, and was nominated for an award from the South Asian Journalists Association for his Forbes.com investigation: "Hacking Bhabha: The Hack of India's Premier Nuclear Power Facility."

For the last year, Penenberg wrote the popular “Media Hack” column for Wired News and this year is an Online Journalism Award finalist in the Online Commentary category for that column. Slate Magazine also has three of the other five finalists in that category: "Human Nature" by William Saletan, “Ad Report Card” by Seth Stevenson and “Kausfiles” by Mickey Kaus. These award nominations are in addition to Slate’s sweep this year at the Eppy’s in the Best Internet News and Best Internet Entertainment categories.

In addition to his reporting duties, Penenberg is an assistant professor at
New York University and the assistant director of the Business and Economic Reporting program in the department of journalism.

This is the second high-profile move to Slate by a journalist in recent weeks. In early September John Dickerson, former chief White House correspondent for Time Magazine, became Slate’s chief political correspondent.
