Title: LAT [heart] the Weinsteins
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From PAUL BRIBBON: Anyone who doubted and/or dissed (as did reps for the Los Angeles Times/Tribune) Nikki Finke for her recent column, on the declining relevancy of newspapers to the marketing departments of the major Hollywood studios, would do well to check out Page E-20 of Friday's Los Angeles Times. It reads,

"The Los Angeles Times (sic, no apostrophe)
Motion Picture Marketing Team
Congratulates (cq italics and blue type)
The Weinstein Company
on their (sic, plural) new endeavor
... (list of 17 movie titles) ...
Los Angeles Times."

Not only is this full-page public-fellating of the Weinsteins not in the business section where it might make a slight bit of sense -- one business wishing another well on a commercial endeavor -- but it appears smack-dab in the middle of Calendar, which also is home to movie reviews and other analytic pieces (such as they are) on the arts and studio activities. Do LAT readers really want to be assaulted with such a brazen currying of favor alongside the Friday menu of criticism and puff pieces? I doubt it.

The only thing lacking in the ad were the words, "Dear Harv and Bob, this space is reserved for you ..."

The trades pull this kind of crap all the time. Even for post-Jack Fuller Tribune Co. brass, though, such pandering is unusual. Maybe the editors of the LA Times' infamous Staples Center advertorial could be recruited for a special section.
