Discovery Channel news release

Silver Spring, MD - Discovery Communications announced today that Ted Koppel will host and produce long form programming examining major global topics and events exclusively for the Discovery Channel. A 42-year veteran of network broadcasting, Koppel will be Managing Editor at the Discovery Channel, and is joined at Discovery Communications by longtime Executive Producer Tom Bettag and eight former Nightline staff members. Billy Campbell, President, Discovery Networks US, to whom Koppel and Bettag will report, made the announcement.

"Discovery has always represented the highest quality television in the world. With Ted Koppel and his team, Discovery is making a long-term commitment to produce high quality programming that gives our global audience insight, perspective and analysis beyond just the headlines," said Campbell. "Our objective is to create a more substantial approach to in-depth journalism. We want audiences to know that when there is a major world event or topic that affects our lives, and they are looking for more context, more depth and more information, Discovery Channel is where they will find it."

"The ten of us are enormously excited to be at a place that wants nothing more than to produce the kind of television journalism that focuses on issues that matter to the largest number of people," Koppel said. "We look forward to creating quality programming that provides the in-depth information for which Discovery Channel is known."

Koppel and Bettag will begin working with the company's top programming executives to develop a slate of long-form programming, including town hall meetings that will examine some of the most important issues in the world today. In a multi-year deal, Koppel and Bettag will join Discovery Communications immediately with the first program scheduled to air in fall 2006 on the Discovery Channel, headed by General Manager Jane Root.
