Title: Miami Herald's Miller decides not to take AP job
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

E-mail from Miami Herald managing editor/news-features Judy Miller

Dear Colleagues and Friends:

After a lot of thought and soul-searching I've decided to stay in Florida. The AP job as National Editor was every journalist's dream - working for a great newsgathering organization with wonderful people in the media capital of the world. The changes going on there under Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll, Managing Editor Mike Silverman and Deputy National Editor Kristin Gazlay are incredibly exciting, as they move smartly toward the multimedia future of a top-flight organization. I couldn't think of a better job with better people.

But in the intervening weeks since the announcement of my taking that job, family events have compelled me to make a different decision. I need to stay in Florida for family reasons. My parents will move to Florida part-time, where I can be near them.

Given my decision to stay here, I am taking a job as a Managing Director of Kroll & Associates in Miami, the world's leading investigations firm, overseeing investigations in Florida, the Caribbean and Latin America. The job allows me to pursue my first love - investigating and helping people -- while also allowing me to stay near family.

When it comes to investigations, Kroll is second to none. The company has a discipline for the work and respect for the craft that is a big part of why they are successful - they get to the bottom of a case, and that is what I have done for my whole career. So it is a great opportunity to join a team of hard-core investigators who love and respect the investigative craft.

A big part of my journalism career has been about bringing more integrity to public institutions - and putting bad guys away. Integrity is a big part of what Kroll is about. Kroll was hired as court-ordered monitor of the carting (garbage) industry in Nassau County, to keep organized crime out of the industry. Kroll has a strong Real Estate Integrity practice in New York that is dedicated to keeping fraud and organized crime out of New York construction projects. Kroll monitors union elections Plumbers Local 1 in New York and the Hotel Trades Council in New York. Kroll monitors the LAPD and Detroit PD consent decrees.

On the corporate side, a big part of what Kroll does is help companies ferret out fraud, internal theft, dishonest business partners, resume cheats, etc. Several of the company's notable investigations have resulted in criminal prosecutions against corporate wrongdoers. The company also has a substantial Foreign Corrupt Practices Act practice, helping companies set up and implement FCPA compliance programs and investigate suspected violations.

Thank you for your emails, words of encouragement and support during my transition. I'm proud to have been associated with The Miami Herald, a top-flight paper, and a world-class news agency (however briefly). My last official day here will be March 30.
