Title:
Daniszewski named AP international editor
Posted By:
Jim Romenesko
Associated Press memo
From: Carroll, Kathleen

Subject: AP's New International Editor
To: All Staff
From: Kathleen Carroll and Mike Silverman
We’re happy to announce that John Daniszewski will rejoin The Associated Press as International Editor.
John has spent the past 19 years abroad for The AP and for The Los Angeles Times, covering some of the most significant social and political changes of our time. And many of the conflicts in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
For the past decade, John has been a foreign correspondent for the LA Times in Cairo, Moscow, Baghdad and finally as the Times’ bureau chief in London. He was based in Baghdad through all of 2003, one of the few American reporters to stay through the U.S. invasion, the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s government and the unrest that followed. He has returned to Iraq several times since 2003.
Before joining the Times, John spent 16 years with The AP, starting as a stringer while still a student at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he joined AP in 1979 in Philadelphia, transferred to Harrisburg in 1980, the general desk (now the national desk) in 1981 and international desk in 1986. Later that year, he was posted to Warsaw as correspondent. And in 1993, he was named COB in South Africa.
For the AP, he covered the collapse of communism in Poland _ a precursor to the end of communism throughout Eastern Europe _ and the election of President Nelson Mandela and the assumption of black majority rule in South Africa.
In 1989, he was shot in the arm and seriously wounded at a checkpoint while covering the overthrow of Nicolae Ceausescu in Romania.
In addition to the war in Iraq, John has covered conflicts in Bosnia, Serbia, Croatia, Kosovo, Afghanistan, Chechnya and the aftermaths of civil war in Rwanda and Angola.
(John also hired many fine AP journalists, including current London COB Paisley Dodds and his predecessor, Debbie Seward.)
John grew up in Centreville, Ohio, and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in economics from the Wharton School.
He and his wife, Dru Menaker (herself a former AP bureau chief and journalist) are the parents of two children.
John starts in early May. His family will join him in summer. They plan to live in Rockland County, New York.
We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank Laura Myers, who has done a spectacular job as acting International Editor since December. She will continue in that role until early May. We’ll announce additional transition news as it gets sorted out.

Dear All,
It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that John Daniszewski is leaving us to become International Editor of the AP. Our great loss is AP's great gain.
John has been a wonderful colleague since he joined the paper 10 years ago, and has had a remarkable career here as Bureau Chief in Cairo, Moscow, Baghdad and London. He also has been a dear friend, almost
since the moment he padded out barefoot to greet me at 3 a.m. in a
Sharm-el Sheik hotel lobby when I arrived to cover an Arab-Israeli summit with him in 1996.
I think I speak for everyone who has worked with John when I say we will miss his humor, optimism, generosity, news sense and dedication
to excellent journalism. John has been a star at the Times and our readers will miss his reporting, highlighted by his courageous coverage of the war to oust Saddam Hussein and the beginning of the Iraqi
insurgency.
I have tremendous respect for John and wish him the very best in his new job.
