Title: Nelson leaves Los Angeles Times
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Memo from Los Angeles Times Washington bureau chief Doyle McManus

Colleagues:

I am very sorry to report that Deb Nelson, who has brilliantly led our
investigative team since 2001, will be leaving us in July for a teaching job at the University of Maryland.

Deb's leadership of the i-team, the largest and most powerful investigative operation of any newspaper's Washington bureau, has helped bring us a Pulitzer Prize and a long list of other honors -- and, more important, has enabled us to publish an impressive body of high-impact journalism in the public interest.

Maryland has wooed her away with a job that Deb says is exactly what she wanted to do next: She'll be teaching investigative reporting at one of the country's best journalism schools and launching a new program under the Carnegie Journalism Initiative, the Carnegie Corporation's ambitious effort to improve journalism education nationwide.

Her departure will be a loss for us, mitigated only slightly by the fact
that it's in a good cause. We'll organize several opportunities to bid Deb
farewell as her departure approaches. Thanks.

Doyle
