Colleagues:

After almost twenty-seven years at BusinessWeek, including twenty-two as Art Director, Malcolm Frouman has decided to leave the magazine.

Since his appointment as Art Director in 1984, Malcolm has been responsible for many dramatic design improvements to BusinessWeek including livelier layouts, stronger informational graphics, a more imaginative use of conceptual illustration and photography, and most especially, the creation of many memorable covers. Less than two years after Malcolm's appointment, BusinessWeek was nominated for a National Magazine Award for design, a first for the magazine. Soon after that, Malcolm received a McGraw-Hill Excellence in Management Award for the design innovations he brought to the magazine. Malcolm's work for BusinessWeek has been recognized with many other awards, including from The Society of Publication Designers, The Art Directors Club, and The Society of Illustrators.

In 2003, Malcolm successfully directed the first major redesign of BusinessWeek in twenty years. His work on that project earned him a McGraw-Hill Excellence in Leadership Award. He also led the first redesign of BusinessWeek Online in 2000.

In addition to his work for the magazine, Malcolm has served as the Chairman of the McGraw-Hill Design Association, the Vice President of the Society of Publication Designers, and a member of the Queens College Journalism Advisory Board.

I want to thank Malcolm for all his contributions and especially for being such a good partner in the eighteen months that we have worked together. Please join me in wishing him all the best!

Former Managing Editor Mark Morrison is retiring after a distinguished 32-year career at BusinessWeek. Starting in January, Mark will be teaching journalism at The University of Texas at Austin, where, as a student, he was Editor of The Daily Texan.

Before taking on his current assignment as National Correspondent in 2005, Mark served as ME for 12 years. Prior to that, he held a number of key positions including Assistant Managing Editor, Senior Editor, Chicago Bureau Chief, Cleveland Bureau Chief, and Houston Correspondent.

While Mark was ME, he directed the day-to-day operations of the magazine, which won 4 National Magazine Awards, 4 Gerald Loebs, and 11 Overseas Press Club awards. During those years, BusinessWeek launched its online site, its weekly television show, and SmallBiz. Mark received the McGraw-Hill Excellence in Leadership Award in 2004.

Mark represented the magazine in many forums. He made regular appearances on CNN’s Lou Dobbs Tonight, hosted and moderated numerous conferences and special events, such as the “Captains of Industry” series, and served as a judge for major journalism awards, including the Gerald Loebs.

Mark not only distinguished himself as a journalist but as a straight-shooting, clear-thinking mentor to hundreds of BusinessWeek staffers, past and present. Please join me in thanking Mark for his many
extraordinary contributions to BusinessWeek and wishing him all the best in the classroom and on the golf course.
