Title: Globe union wrong to solicit pols' letter
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From MITCHELL ZUCKOFF, professor of journalism, Boston University: Let me get this straight: The union that represents journalists at the Boston Globe sought help from politicians and other union leaders in making the case against cuts by the paper’s owner, The New York Times. Not surprisingly, the pols and union bosses leapt at the chance, sending an impassioned open letter yesterday to Times Chairman Arthur Sulzberger Jr. signed by Sen. Ted Kennedy, U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch, a dozen state legislators, a handful of union presidents, five Boston city councilors, and several other local pols. I don’t want to malign the motives of the letter signers, but every one of them could potentially benefit from doing a good deed for the reporters, photographers, copy editors, and other union journalists who cover them. That means the union’s request was a textbook case of seeking favors from sources and subjects. I was a member of the Globe union for more than a decade, and I want its members to enjoy every protection. But when union leaders violate the principles that underpin their members’ work, they weaken the individuals and the institution they’re supposedly trying to protect. [Permalink]
