Title: K-rations, anyone?
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From GARY DRETZKA: If the editorial writers at CJR had dug just a bit deeper, they might have been able to point out that, immediately before joining the Bush administration, Donald Rumsfeld served as a director on the board of Tribune Co. It also might have referenced the recollections of the current publisher of the Los Angeles Times, in its Current section, of playing squash with the just-fired Defense Secretary. It was David Hiller's first byline in his new post at the LAT.

Perhaps, the logic used in the formulation of "Why Tribune is like Rumsfeld" would have been less strained if it had made such connections. Indeed, in a more Pentagon-centric publication, an editorial titled "Why Rumsfeld was like Tribune" might make sense.

Giving the devil his due, however, TRB stock was much closer to $50 than $25 when he resigned to join "W." If Wall Street had its way, Rumsfeld probably would be sitting in Dennis FitzSimons' seat right now, plotting a Shock and Awe campaign against the LAT's rank and file.

Maybe the Pentagon could put the war in Iraq on hiatus for a couple of weeks, and use the savings to buy Tribune Co. for Halliburton. Zoned editions of RedEye could drive Stars&Stripes off newsstands in South Korea, Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guam and every American military base from camps Pendleton to Lejeune.

As for Tribune reporters and editors ... let them eat surplus K-rations. [Permalink]
