Press release
THE HUFFINGTON POST HIRES MANAGING EDITOR
ELINOR SHIELDS, BBC VETERAN, TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR
DAY-TO-DAY EDITORIAL OPERATIONS
New York, NY -- January 11, 2007 -- The Huffington Post today announced that Elinor Shields has joined the company as managing editor. Ms. Shields will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day editorial operations including original reporting. Shields comes to The Huffington Post from the BBC in London, where she was a senior journalist on the Web site's world desk. She will be based in Huffington Post's New York office.
"We are thrilled to have Elinor join our company," said Arianna Huffington, co-founder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post. "She comes to us with a wealth of experience in news gathering and online journalism and her worldwide contacts will be a great addition to our news operation. Working closely with our group blog and news editors, Elinor will help us expand our editorial content while keeping us focused on delivering top-quality blogs and news."
"Joining The Huffington Post gives me the chance to do what every journalist wants -- to help build a world class news operation," said Ms. Shields. "The Huffington Post has become a great online brand – the first Internet newspaper – and I look forward to helping it expand and build on its already strong community."
During her three years with the BBC, Shields' work focused on Washington and the Middle East. Prior to the BBC, she worked as a reporter at TIME Europe in London.
Kenneth Lerer, co-founder of the Huffington Post, said, "2006 was a great year for the Huffington Post, and in '07 we look to expand both our editorial and business operations. We will be launching new editorial features in the coming months as well as new business partnerships. The addition of Elinor on the editorial side and Jim Smith on the business side as our new Chief Revenue Officer, will allow us to move forward rapidly with expansion plans."
Shields has an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and an MA in History from Cambridge University. She has dual US-British nationality, and has traveled extensively in Europe, the US, Central America and South Asia.
