Title: Sun-Sentinel offers buyouts to select staffers
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Memo from South Florida Sun-Sentinel editor Earl Maucker:

An announcement from Earl

For those of you unable to attend today's staff meeting, I mentioned two
very important topics. I am writing to make sure you know of those
discussions and to let you know that I am available to talk further.

I announced today that we are accepting voluntary separations from a small
group of newsroom staffers. During the past few months, I've had a number
of newsroom employees ask about the possibility of an early retirement or
voluntary separation package, so we are going to accept applications.
Those eligible must be 55 years-old or older and have at least 10 years of
service with the company. Roughly 15 applications will be accepted. Our
Human Resources department is sending packets of information overnight to
the homes of qualified employees. Details will be outlined in those
packets.

I also discussed details of our transformation to a 24-hour continuous
newsroom. I know there is an appetite and an eagerness to get involved
online. As most of you know, we have already moved some schedules earlier
in the day and launched some initiatives. Vice President and General
Manager of Sun-Sentinel.com (and former deputy managing editor) Kathy
Skipper and I will be doing some presentations in the newsroom very soon
to provide more details about our plans. We are excited about the future
opportunities these changes will bring and are looking forward to telling
you more.

I will be visiting our South and Palm Beach County offices later today to
cover these issues and be available the rest of the week for more
discussions.
