Title: LAT's Loeb named Philly Inquirer metro editor

Memo to Philadelphia Inquirer staffers

Subject: New Metro Editor

Vernon Loeb reported on everything from City Hall to Tiananmen Square for The Philadelphia Inquirer in a lustrous 15-year period that also took him to the battlefields of Harrisburg and the first Gulf War. He interrupted his Inquirer career to cover the Pentagon and the CIA for The Washington Post and to manage investigations for The Los Angeles Times, an interruption that allowed Vernon to teach them about Philadelphia-style smarts and ambition and to learn a few new moves himself. Suitably prepared, Vernon is ready to resume his work here at The Inquirer. I am pleased to announce that he will start next month as Metropolitan Editor.

I have had the good fortune to join with Vernon in long conversations about our newsrooms, about the power of the web, about the Philadelphia metro area and about journalism that sets the agenda for a region. Work he edited from Los Angeles ended up as Pulitzer finalists and winning shelves of other national awards. More important than that, Vernon is passionate about quality journalism and he knows how to work with other talented journalists to help them accomplish their best work.

Vernon and his wife, Patti, have four children. He will visit us soon and start in his role toward the end of March. Vernon is a marathon runner and knows how to set a dazzling pace. Please join me in congratulating him.

Carl
