Title: Globe announces hiring of Badkhen
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Boston Globe metro editor Brian McGrory's memo to staff

Hey all,

A quick dose of good news. We've hired Anna Badkhen to work a one-year stint as a general assignment reporter in metro, starting the first week of July. She's filling the slot left open by Brian MacQuarrie's book leave. Anna is the terrific foreign and national correspondent for the San Francisco Chronicle. In that job, she's traveled early and often to Iraq, extensively covered the war against terrorism, and reported on the humanitarian crises in Kenya and Somalia.

Before that, she was the Moscow bureau chief for the Chronicle, and prior to that, was a freelancer from Russia, her work gracing the pages of the Globe, among many other notable publications.

She's a native of St. Petersburg -- the one in Russia, not Florida. That means English is her second language, which will be extremely humbling for the rest of us when see how well she writes. She lives in Plymouth. She's married to David Filipov. We are damned lucky to get her.

Brian
