Title: Thompson quits LAT to join NYT
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Memo from Los Angeles Times DC bureau chief Doyle McManus

Colleagues:
I am sorry to announce that Marilyn Thompson will be leaving us next month to become a reporter in the Washington Bureau of the New York Times.

In 14 months as our national investigative editor, Marilyn has helped produce an impressive body of great journalism -- from Robin Fields, Chuck Neubauer & Wally Roche on dubious political contributions to Alan Miller & Myron Levin on U-Haul and David Willman on biodefense (to list the greatest hit bylines in approximately alphabetical order). She has midwifed fruitful collaborations among investigators and beat reporters. She has taught us a lot about doing high-impact investigations quickly and well. We will miss her dearly.

Our ambition to do the best investigative reporting in America is unchanged. Over the coming months, we plan not only to maintain our investigative team, but to strengthen it. We’ll begin with a nationwide search - both inside and outside the paper - for a great new investigative editor. If you’d like to suggest a candidate, please do. Thanks

Doyle
