Atlantic Media press release

RONALD BROWNSTEIN JOINS ATLANTIC MEDIA COMPANY AS POLITICAL DIRECTOR

WASHINGTON -- Atlantic Media Company, the Washington, D.C. based publishing company whose flagship properties include The Atlantic, National Journal, and Government Executive, announced today another top level addition to its already impressive team of political reporters and analysts. Ronald Brownstein, a two time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of presidential campaigns, is joining Atlantic Media’s editorial team this month as Political Director, a newly created position within the company.

Brownstein, most recently the National Affairs Columnist for the Los Angeles Times, has also served as the Times’ National Political Correspondent and the author of the weekly Washington Outlook column. Mr. Brownstein is a National Journal alumnus, having served as the magazine’s White House and National Politics Correspondent from 1983-1986, and then as its West Coast Correspondent through 1989. He will join the staff of Atlantic Media on September 24.

At Atlantic Media, Brownstein will write a weekly column for National Journal and regularly contribute other pieces for National Journal and The Atlantic, as well as other publications within National Journal Group’s print and online portfolio including CongressDaily, The Hotline, and NationalJournal.com. He will help coordinate political coverage and activities across publications produced by Atlantic Media, as well as participate in the development and launch of new ventures and partnerships. In addition, he will provide insight on the latest political news and developments as an on-air political analyst through National Journal Group’s partnerships with MSNBC and XM Satellite Radio.

“We are thrilled to have a veteran like Ron rejoining our team to lend his considerable talent and insights as our new Political Director,” said Suzanne P. Clark, President of National Journal Group. “His vast experience in the political and policy circles of Washington, combined with his keen analytical abilities and political instincts, make him a great addition to what is already the premier political team in town and will ensure that readers of Atlantic Media publications are getting the very best political news and analysis.”

“Only a remarkable opportunity could convince me to leave the Los Angeles Times, where I’ve been honored to work with great journalists and colleagues for nearly two decades” said Brownstein. “But such an opportunity is exactly what this new position at Atlantic Media presents. I’m excited about the chance to contribute in many ways to this growing constellation of outstanding publications, which I’ve admired, and voraciously consumed, for years. The year ahead promises to be one of the most fascinating elections of our lifetime and with its great stable of editorial talent, I expect the Atlantic Media publications to be right in the center of it-as a trusted source of analysis, insight and reporting for readers and voters all across America.”

Mr. Brownstein joined the Los Angeles Times in January 1990, and has served in editorial positions there since then with the exception of seven months in 1998 when he served as Chief Political Correspondent and columnist for U.S. News and World Report.

Mr. Brownstein has also served as a political analyst for CNN, and has appeared frequently on network and cable television including "Meet the Press," "This Week with George Stephanopolous," "Face the Nation," "The Newshour with Jim Lehrer," and Charlie Rose, among others. He is the author of five books. His sixth book, The Second Civil War: How Extreme Partisanship Has Paralyzed Washington and Polarized America, will be published by Penguin in November.

Mr. Brownstein was twice named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, receiving that recognition for his coverage of both the 1996 and 2004 presidential campaigns. In addition, he is the recipient of several journalism awards, including the Exceptional Merit in Media award from the National Women's Political Caucus, the Excellence in Media award from the National Council on Public Polls in 2005, and the Journalist of the Year award from the Los Angeles Press Club in 2005. In 2007, the American Political Science Association presented him its Carey McWilliams award, granted “to honor a major journalistic contribution to our understanding of politics.”
