Title: Knight Ridder considered a central copy desk
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From CHRIS LOPEZ: MediaNews President Joseph Lodovic raises a valid question about whether every newspaper needs a copy desk. It's a question that's been debated in corporate boardrooms over the past 3-4 years, starting with Knight Ridder. [Lopez was editor of the Contra Costa Times in its KR days.] KR looked precisely at creating super regional copy editing centers that would have centralized the copy editing functions of its 32 newspapers. The proposal had merit and probably would have been implemented had KR survived. Since KR's demise, other companies have and are studying the concept. In fact, MediaNews is already proving that each individual newsroom doesn't need a copy desk. Its East Bay operations are set up around the notion that copy editing functions can be to an extent centralized within a cluster of newspapers. Multi-media companies like MediaNews will continue find cost efficiencies as they centralize the production of both print products and online operations. A regional concept that lets one building copy edit, design and produce websites for a cluster of properties is worth exploring for any media corporation. Beyond copy editing, at least one media corporation is centralizing the toning of images. Rather than have imagers working in each shop, all images go offsite to a regional center to get toned and then are sent back to the individual newspaper. That's another move that other companies will likely follow. Permalink]
