Title: Bacon doesn't deserve to be fried
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

From MICHAEL BARBARO, staff writer, New York Times: Chris Daly could not be more off the mark about Perry Bacon, my colleague at The Washington Post, or about what he perceives as the ill-conceived "fast-tracking" of young reporters. Let's start with Mr. Bacon, whom I have known for seven years, beginning at the Yale Daily News, where we both worked in college. Since that time, Mr. Bacon has amassed a resume that should be the envy of our industry, with stops at The Washington Post, Louisville Courier-Journal, The National Journal, Time Magazine and, finally, The Post again, where he is a political reporter. I know few journalists who are more diligent or committed to getting the facts right. His body of work speaks for itself: over the last year, he has had at least 15 front-page bylines for The Post. Fast tracking? How about incredibly hard working.

As for under-30 reporters: they are everywhere, writing front-page stories for every newspaper. Just look at The Post (which sends reporters under 30 to cover the war in Iraq); The New York Times (which, like The Post, has them covering the presidential campaign and entire industries); and The Wall Street Journal (which encourages them to investigate financial chicanery and win Pulitzer prizes, as another under-30 colleague of mine did last year).

I am not sure why Mr. Daly has decided to judge Mr. Bacon on the basis
of a single story. But I can tell him that his judgment is just plain
wrong. [Permalink]
