Topic: Memos Sent to Romenesko

Title: NASCAR writer Hinton leaves Tribune Co.
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

This unsigned memo was sent to the Orlando Sentinel sports staff on Wednesday (1/2/08) morning

With the increasing demand to produce local news, we've decided to eliminate our national NASCAR coverage and focus more on local sports coverage. Following a joint decision by the Sentinel, Chicago Tribune and the Sun-Sentinel, we won't be covering as many NASCAR races and will spend more of our budget on local news. With this decision, award-winning reporter Ed Hinton has decided to leave the company. He is the best NASCAR writer in the nation, winning more awards than anyone, and will be missed dearly. He spearheaded our coverage of racing and safety, the death of Dale Earnhardt, NASCAR and cheating, and the life and times of Bill France. His engaging personality, his Faulknerian mind and his knowledge of racing cannot be replaced. We wish Ed well in his future endeavors.
