DEADLINE TO VOLUNTEER
FOR BUYOUT EXTENDED!!

The Times informed the Guild late Tuesday afternoon they may not have enough volunteers from the Newsroom to achieve the staff reductions announced last month. Terry Hayes, V.P. of Labor Relations, told the Guild that The Times may need to resort to involuntary layoffs and that there is a possibility some of those layoffs would be done out of seniority order.

Bill O’Meara, President of The Newspaper Guild of New York, requested the Times extend the deadline for volunteers to apply for a buyout in the hope enough people would step forward and avoid the need for an involuntary layoff.

The Times has agreed to extend the deadline for employees to volunteer for a buyout. All requests for a voluntary buyout must be submitted by 2:00 PM EST Friday, March 7, 2008.

In the event the Times does not receive enough volunteers, any involuntary layoff would be done in accordance with the Guild contract. Layoffs should be done in inverse order of seniority; however, the contract does allow the company to lay off an employee out of seniority order in certain circumstances. The Guild would need to evaluate any out of seniority layoff on a case-by-case basis to determine if that particular layoff was done in accordance with our contract. Those laid off out of seniority get an enhanced severance package, but they don't get paid extended medical coverage and they do NOT have to sign a release of their rights. The Guild intends to make sure the exception to seniority layoffs is not abused and will use it resources to defend our contract.

Volunteers should send a signed letter to Unit Chairperson Art Mulford or Grievance Chairperson Grant Glickson at the Guild Office on the 28th Floor of 620 Eighth Avenue. Please include your job title, department, telephone extension and e-mail address. The Times has said it will consider all volunteers, with the sole exception being employees of New York Times Digital, but may not be able to accept all volunteers in certain areas that are critical to the operation, such as copy and photo editing.
