Subject: STAFF ANNOUNCEMENT

To the Staff:
We're making a change in the way we edit news and structure the news desk.

In essence, we'll organize the desk into two parts. One will focus on general news, from the U.S. and around the world, as well as the economy. The other section of the News Desk will focus on corporate and business news. Each will serve the print and online Journals.

The subjects handled by the general news desk will include U.S. and world news, the economy, regulation, politics and policy -- matters that usually appear in the A section of the print edition. The general desk (and soon the A section of the paper) will also deal with coverage of news about education, religion, science, philanthropy and other issues.

The corporate news desk will oversee news about companies, management and strategy, technology, media and marketing and the art of business. It will oversee an enlarged Marketplace section of the print paper, which will be a robust, news-driven, international-minded compendium of all that matters in business news each day.

The shifts in content within the print edition already have begun, with the addition in recent weeks of several pages of additional newshole, and we now are embarking on the creation of the new desk structure. To ensure a smooth transition to this new world, we've asked two of the Journal's most talented editors to take on new responsibilities:

Matt Murray will become General News Editor, with responsibility for the newspaper's front section and the competitiveness of general news across all platforms. He will continue to lead the integration of our online and print news desks, a critical task as we adapt to a new content-management system that will enable us to publish stories seamlessly across media. Matt brings first-rate news skills to this task, from his days as a beat reporter covering GE to his skill shepherding the extra onto the front page in its early days. In the past nine months as National Editor, he has worked tirelessly and effectively to sharpen the Journal’s news judgment and ensure that we respond quickly and intelligently to news, in print and online. Matt is a graduate of Northwestern University.

Elyse Tanouye will become Corporate News Editor, overseeing companies coverage and ensuring that we remain the gold standard of business journalism. Elyse has been at the Journal since 1991. She started in Money & Investing and then moved to the health group, where she was an outstanding reporter and a contributor to the Journal's Pulitzer-winning coverage of the AIDS crisis. She became chief of our Health and Science bureau in 2001 and since then has overseen our thoughtful and competitive coverage of the huge shifts in the pharmaceutical and health-insurance industries. She also spearheaded the Health Blog and has been involved in several other joint print/online ventures. Elyse has a bachelor's degree from Reed College and an MBA from Columbia University.

Both Matt and Elyse will report to Bill Grueskin.

There is much work to do in structuring the news-editing operations, and in the next few weeks, Matt, Elyse and Bill will meet with many of you to discuss the best possible arrangements. With the new focus and the addition of space dedicated to business, corporate and general news, the Journal will be stronger than ever.

Regards,

Brauchli/Grueskin, New York
