Title: Boston Globe accept 23 buyout applications
Posted By: Jim Romenesko

Boston Globe editor Marty Baron's memo to staff

To all:

Thank you for your patience throughout the buyout program, which we
have now completed.

The Globe has accepted a total of 23 applications for buyouts from the
newsroom and the staff of editorial writers. As you know, there have
been additional staff reductions this year through other means, such
as ordinary departures and frozen positions. We have been able to
avoid layoffs.

While some of you may wish to see a list of those taking the buyout, I
have chosen not to release one out of respect for employees who prefer
not to have their names widely disseminated.

We are losing talented people who have given many years of hard work
and dedication to the Globe. Along with the difficulty of seeing
admired friends and colleagues leave our newsroom, the overriding
feeling is one of appreciation and gratitude for their immense and
wide-ranging contributions to the paper's mission.

Over the next few weeks, we will begin adjusting to the new staffing
level. A handful of positions that we believe must be filled will be
posted, and we anticipate filling almost all of them internally. That
means new opportunities for staffers, but it may also mean some
additional uncertainty. Apologies in advance for the inevitable
disruption. I hope you'll give us a little slack as we sort things
out.

As positions are posted and you consider your own career interests, we
invite you to think outside your current departments and job
classifications.

We have gone through tough times, but our newsroom remains packed with talent. Our journalism remains strong. So many of you have been
generous with your time, energy, and ideas in exploring ways to thrive
in a new environment for all media. That process of reinvention continues in high gear, and we hope to be back in touch in a few weeks
about the latest thinking and latest developments. Meantime, we can
all look forward to more outstanding work.

Marty
