NATIONAL CITY AND REGIONAL MAGAZINE AWARD WINNERS

Texas Monthly, Seattle Metropolitan and Memphis magazines won gold awards for general excellence in their circulation categories in the 23rd Annual National City and Regional Magazine Awards competition announced June 2 at CRMA’s annual conference in Memphis.

Texas Monthly and Los Angeles magazines captured the most awards. In addition to general excellence, Texas Monthly took gold awards in general criticism (Christopher Kelly), writer of the year (S.C. Gwynn), excellence in writing, cover and excellence online. Los Angeles took top awards in food and dining writing (Patric Kuh), personality profile (J.R. Moehringer), feature story (Jesse Katz), feature design, designer of the year (Steven Banks), excellence in design, and leisure and lifestyle interests.

This year’s other big winners were Philadelphia and Atlanta magazines. Atlanta won gold awards in reporting (Paige Williams), special issues and community service, while Philadelphia won the top prize for columns by Sandy Hingston. Four magazines – Chicago, Memphis, Mpls.St.Paul and Washingtonian – won three awards. Berkshire Living, Evansville Living, Hour Detroit, Madison and Seattle Metropolitan each won two. Eighteen other titles with geographic locations that span the United States also won awards, including newcomers Sactown (Sacramento, California) and Inside Columbia (Columbia, Missouri).

For the second year in a row, the top prize for civic journalism went to 5280 (Denver). This year’s award went to a story by Mike Kessler that focused on how the U.S. government reneged on promises to compensate cancer-stricken workers in Colorado who endured years of radiation exposure during the Cold War.

More than 70 judges representing such publications as Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, O, The Oprah Magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, Sports Illustrated, Fast Company, Better Homes and Gardens, Good Housekeeping, Essence, Men’s Journal, The New York Times, Gourmet, Food & Wine, Folio, AARP The Magazine, Bon Appetit, Southern Living, ESPN The Magazine, The Washington Post, Country Home, Complex, The Chicago Tribune, The Writer, Fitness and journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism selected the finalists.

The competition is open to more than 90 members of CRMA and other city and regional magazines throughout North America that qualify. The contest is a 23-year-old national competition and has been coordinated by the University of Missouri School of Journalism on behalf of CRMA for the past 12 years.
